Our History
Highway's history is deeply rooted in the Valley. Pentecost came to Youngstown in 1907 through the Federal Street Mission. Out of that ministry, a group of believers came together and began forming a church. This church had its first official pastor in 1933, Pastor L.A. Hill. They had their first baptisms in service in May of 1933! On September 3, 1936, the church was recognized by the General Council as an official Assemblies of God church.
The name Highway Tabernacle was selected by Pastor Hill from Isaiah 35:8, "And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness..." |

What We Believe
The BibleWe believe the Bible is God's Word. It is accurate, authoritative and applicable to our everyday lives. SinWe are all created in the image of God. And the biblical word for sin means to "miss the mark." We all have "missed the mark" and failed to love God and others. And now sin has separated each of us from God. Growing in ChristGod wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and powerful lives in order to help others more effectively. In order to live the holy, fruitful, and power-filled lives God intends for us, we need to be baptized in water, set our mind on Him and His purpose, and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The FutureWe believe the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised and will rule and reign on this earth. History will conclude as the wicked are judged and the righteous enter a new heaven and a new earth. |
GodWe believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy. The Lord Jesus Christ is both God and man and is the only one who can reconcile us to God. SalvationThe penalty for sin is death which God could have rightly enforced. But instead, He sent His Son Jesus to die in our place so that those who have faith in Jesus might have eternal life. In order to receive forgiveness we must repent of our sins, believe in Jesus Christ and submit to His will for our lives. The ChurchWe believe God has individually equipped us and corporately gathered us as His living body so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives, which is to worship God, strengthen the Church, and share the Gospel with the community in which we live.
